For sale is a wonderful watercolor painting by the highly regarded New Jersey American Watercolor Society artist Kent Day Coes (1910 - 2000). Coes painted numerous scenes in and around Denville, New Jersey, where he resided. But the artist traveled widely on the east coast including up to Nova Scotia where he painted some lovely scenes of Saint Margaret's Bay. We believe this to be one of those Nova Scotia locations and it depicts Two charming homes nestled along the banks of a bay with tall Canadian pines framing the scene. Done in beautiful coloration throughout. The painting is signed by the artist with his lovely signature to the lower, right. This painting has no glass. The glass was cracked and has been removed. It is framed in a modernist whitewashed picture frame probably from the 60s or 70s. We would assume the painting is of that timeframe as well. Slight wavings to the top of the painting, but most likely because it was taken out from behind the glass covering. Could easily be laid flat when new glass is added.

The backer card board and the matting should be replaced with not acidic, archival quality materials for future preservation. Framed - 23" x 29".

Watercolor - 17 3/4" x 21 3/4"0. Sight Size - 14 1/2" x 20 1/2".

Coes attended New York University before studying at the Art Students League under George Bridgeman and Frank Vincent DuMond, and at the Grand Central School of Art under Edmund Greacen and Grant Reynard. He joined the staff of McGraw-Hill Publications in about 1945, and at the time of his retirement in 1975 was art director of two of the firm's periodicals. A watercolorist, he is noted for his traditional landscape scenes, often centered on picturesque buildings, but Coes's life-long interest in railroad history and operations led to trains, engines and their surroundings being the subject most favored by both the artist and his audience. He has also frequently been commissioned by trade publications for views of modern manufacturing plants. He is the recipient of the Allied Artists of America Gold Medal in 1959, and the National Arts Club Bronze Medal in 1972, among other awards. Coes has made his home in New Jersey since 1928, and was a founder of the New Jersey Watercolor Society.

He is also a member of the American Watercolor Society, Allied Artists of America, the Academic Artists Association, and Artists' Fellowship Inc.
